Rotary Club Transforms Nursing Home Kitchen: A Recipe for Community Joy

In a heartfelt demonstration of community service, the Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset has completed its inaugural major project for the Rotary Year 2024-2025. The project involved a complete refurbishment of the kitchen at the Valelevu Salala Street HART Nursing Home.

This nursing home plays a crucial role in providing care and housing for approximately 20 elderly residents, ensuring they have a supportive and secure environment during their later years. The Rotary Club’s efforts have significantly modernized the kitchen, improving the living conditions for those who reside there.

Led by the newly appointed president, Neelam Sharma, the kitchen renovation focused on creating a comfortable and hygienic space for meal preparation and daily cooking activities. During the official handover ceremony, Sharma expressed her joy and gratitude for the project, stating, “I am so happy to say that we have made a real difference in the lives of the residents of the nursing home and made a kitchen they can feel good about and enjoy in their daily activities.”

The updated kitchen features new cabinetry, enhanced storage solutions, modern appliances, and an easier layout designed specifically for the elderly residents. These improvements will not only enhance the kitchen’s functionality but also create a more positive atmosphere in the nursing home.

The completion of this project was made possible by the tireless fundraising efforts of the club’s members. They organized various internal initiatives and received significant support from notable donors, including Tough Wood Joinery Limited for custom cabinetry, Credit Corporation Fiji & PNG for financial assistance, Comfort Home Furnishing Limited for essential kitchen items, and Shreedhar Motors for their contributions.

Sharma recognized the importance of these partnerships, highlighting how community collaboration can foster real change. “This project is a testament to the strength of our community, and it would not have been possible without the contributions from our donors. Their generosity has allowed us to deliver a kitchen that not only meets practical needs but also uplifts spirits. We are deeply grateful for their support,” she stated.

The Valelevu Salala Street HART Nursing Home has long been an essential facility in Suva, offering care and companionship for elderly individuals. Over time, parts of the facility, particularly the kitchen, had needed updating.

This refurbishment marks the first project of the 2024-2025 Rotary year and reflects the Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset’s commitment to enhancing lives through service. The club has a storied history of aiding vulnerable groups in the community, with plans for many more initiatives throughout the year under President Neelam Sharma’s guidance.

Looking ahead, the Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset is enthusiastic about launching additional projects that address urgent community needs. The club is dedicated to building upon the success of this recent initiative and continuing its mission of fostering positive change through direct service and strategic collaborations.

The Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset is an active branch of Rotary International, an organization focused on promoting global goodwill and improving communities through service projects. The club’s members participate in various initiatives aimed at tackling local and regional issues, particularly in health, education, environmental sustainability, and support for vulnerable populations, thereby making a meaningful impact in Suva and beyond.
