Former national rugby player Ropate Rere has expressed deep gratitude toward his family following his recognition as Player of the Final at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s. Rere dedicated this award to his family, who he credits for their steadfast support throughout his rugby career. His efforts were instrumental in leading the Devo Babas to a narrow 10-5 victory against the Dominion Brothers at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
At just 24 years old, Rere was surprised to win the award, especially given the impressive performances of several other players during the tournament. Nevertheless, his pivotal contributions reinforced his status as a key player in this prestigious annual event. “Firstly, I just give thanks to God; if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here today. I thank my family back in the village for always being there for me, supporting me in my rugby career,” Rere shared.
This triumph marks the Devo Babas’ sixth title at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s and solidifies their position at the top of the Fiji Bitter 7s Series. The team’s remarkable consistency has also seen them secure titles at other prestigious tournaments, including the Nawaka 7s, as well as at Wairiki and Labasa.
The achievements of the Devo Babas highlight the importance of teamwork, resilience, and community support in sports, inspiring future generations and celebrating Fiji’s deep-rooted rugby culture. The enthusiastic response from fans during their matches indicates a bright future not only for the Devo Babas but also for the wider rugby community.
Rere’s heartfelt praise for his family’s support serves as a poignant reminder of the behind-the-scenes encouragement that fuels athletes in their pursuit of greatness. This story not only emphasizes individual achievement but also the collective effort and dedication required to reach new heights in sport.
