Former national rugby player Ropate Rere has expressed his gratitude towards his family after winning the Player of the Final Award at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s. Rere dedicated this accolade to his family, recognizing their unwavering support throughout his rugby journey. He played a significant role in leading the Devo Babas to a tense 10-5 victory over Dominion Brothers at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
The 24-year-old did not anticipate winning the award due to the outstanding performances from other players during the tournament. Regardless, Rere’s contributions were pivotal to his team’s success, further establishing him as a key figure in this annual competition. “Firstly, I just give thanks to God; if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here today. I thank my family back in the village for always being there for me, supporting me in my rugby career,” Rere expressed.
This victory marks the Devo Babas’ sixth title at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s and also secures their lead in the Fiji Bitter 7s Series. The team has demonstrated remarkable consistency this season, having also previously claimed titles at the Nawaka 7s, as well as other significant tournaments like Wairiki and Labasa.
In light of their achievements, the Devo Babas’ journey exemplifies the power of teamwork, resilience, and community support, inspiring future generations while celebrating the rich culture of rugby in Fiji. The excitement surrounding their matches reinforces the close bonds among players and fans alike, suggesting a bright future for both the team and the broader rugby community.
Rere’s heartfelt acknowledgment of family support serves as a reminder that behind every athlete’s journey is a network of encouragement that fuels their dreams.
