Tourism Fiji’s sustainability manager, Sunishma Singh, has praised the recent Vesi Reforestation Initiative and the establishment of a food forest at Namamanuca Primary School on Yanuya Island, highlighting the impactful outcomes of collaborative efforts.
Singh noted that the Vesi Reforestation Initiative, spearheaded by Jacks of Fiji in partnership with Tokoriki Island Resort, the Forestry Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry, the Mamanuca Environment Society, and Tourism Fiji, addresses the urgent need to replenish vesi wood. This wood is crucial for crafting the traditional tanoa, an integral part of Fijian kava ceremonies. She emphasized that this initiative not only safeguards cultural heritage but also promotes sustainable environmental practices for future generations.
In addition, the food forest project, which engages children in planting food-bearing seedlings, is designed to instill principles of sustainability in the younger generation. Singh remarked that these seedlings will provide nourishment and create opportunities for agri-tourism and forestry tourism, further reinforcing the community’s economic resilience.
The planting of these trees symbolizes a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future, where cultural traditions and environmental health coexist harmoniously. Singh encouraged the community to recognize the strength found in collaboration and partnerships, which can lead to substantial and lasting change.
During the inaugural food forest planting event, local children planted seedlings for food and timber around the school and throughout the island, ensuring future food security and income for the village. The event was attended by notable figures including Taukei Yanuya Akuila Lati, Marica Vakacola from the Mamanuca Environment Society, and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Education. They all participated in planting trees, marking the occasion’s significance.
The initiative, part of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, was overseen by Robert Ring, the general manager of Tokoriki Island Resort.
This initiative exemplifies a positive trajectory towards sustainable development in Fiji, where community involvement and ecologically sound practices are paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future.
