Beyond the headline

“Be ready.”

That was the blunt warning issued by India’s Rohit Chauhan as he finalised preparations for a slated welterweight clash with Fiji’s Ratu Rakuro at tomorrow’s ZEG Boxing Promotion at Vodafone Arena in Suva. The bout, scheduled for October 14, will be part of a stacked card that opens to the public at 3.30pm with the first bell set for 5pm.

Chauhan, 24, arrives in Suva with growing confidence and a record of six wins — four by knockout — and two losses. Speaking to media, he credited a rigorous training camp and said he is fitter than in previous tours. “Be ready because I am ready for this fight,” he said, adding that his preparation has been good and that he expects a strong contest. The Indian southpaw, fighting in Fiji for only the second time, is known for his stamina and aggressive approach and has said he is aiming to cause another upset following a technical knockout victory over Filise Nabua four months ago.

Rakuo — spelled Ratu Rakuro in promotional material — will be looking to arrest a slide after a reported defeat to Jese Ravudi on September 26, 2025, according to organisers’ notes on the build-up to the card. That loss is being billed as motivation for Rakuro to return to winning form on home soil, where local supporters are expected to turn out in numbers.

The undercard and main event add further weight to the night. The headline bout will see Junior Binnu Singh and India’s Varun Phartyal fight for the Super Bantamweight title, a clash that promoters say will be the championship highlight of the evening. ZEG Boxing Promotion has positioned the event as a showcase for regional talent and visiting Indian fighters, hoping the mix of local names and international opposition will draw a strong crowd to Vodafone Arena.

Chauhan’s presence in Suva reflects a broader pattern of Indian boxers joining Pacific promotions in recent years, bringing contrasting styles and fresh match-ups against established Fijian prospects. Promoters have promoted Chauhan’s stamina and finishing ability as the key narrative going into tomorrow’s card, while local coaches underline Rakuro’s power and home-crowd backing as potential equalisers.

Tickets remain available for the event, and organisers have urged fans to arrive early once gates open at 3.30pm. With the welterweight contest pencilled as a high-intensity fixture and the Super Bantamweight title bout topping the bill, tomorrow’s ZEG Promotion card promises to be a significant night for boxing followers in Suva and for the fighters aiming to boost their regional standings.
