A member of the prominent Rockefeller family, Ostillman Rockefeller, was recently attacked by a shark while swimming in waist-deep water off Laucala Island, Fiji. This incident occurred during a holiday with the late billionaire Malcolm Forbes.
Upon arriving at the island, Rockefeller reportedly went for a swim shortly after checking in to his bungalow, situated a few meters from the shore. While swimming alone, he experienced a frightening encounter when he was bitten twice on his right leg. Fortunately, he managed to swim back to shore and crawl to his bungalow, where he alerted the island’s main office for assistance.
Island workers quickly rushed to his aid, and a nurse from the Qamea Health Centre was called for help. Dr. Viliame Taoi from Waiyevo Hospital was later summoned to attend to Rockefeller, who was reported to be in a stable condition despite some blood loss. Dr. Taoi mentioned that Rockefeller required stitches for a laceration on his right Achilles tendon.
Dr. Serupepeli Goneyali, the Medical Superintendent at Lautoka Hospital, shared that there has been a significant influx of calls from the United States expressing concern over Rockefeller’s condition. He noted that arrangements were being made for a special aircraft and a team of specialists to facilitate his transfer to New York for further examination.
Rockefeller recounted the harrowing experience of feeling his right leg being pulled underwater, leading to a state of panic. After the attack, he swam approximately 300 meters to reach safety, eventually receiving help from other guests at the resort.
The incident highlights the importance of awareness and safety when engaging in ocean activities, particularly in regions known for marine wildlife. While shark encounters are rare, this event serves as a reminder to both locals and tourists to exercise caution, especially in unfamiliar waters. Despite the traumatic experience, Rockefeller stated that he remained undeterred and hoped to return to Fiji in the future.
The recovery process for Rockefeller appears promising as he is expected to receive further medical care and support, which may motivate discussions around shark safety and public awareness in areas with regular water activities.
