Rochdale Hornets, competing in League 1, have announced the signing of Fijian prop Joe Taira, marking his return to the club for a third time. The 35-year-old veteran began his professional rugby career with the Hornets in 2016 and has amassed an impressive total of 104 appearances in their jersey.
During his initial tenure from 2016 to 2018, Taira played 70 matches before spending two seasons with the Batley Bulldogs. He rejoined Rochdale in 2021 and continued to make an impact on the field with 34 additional games over the following two years. After a recent spell at the community club Rochdale Mayfield, Taira has officially signed a one-year deal to return to the Hornets for the 2025 season.
Although he did not earn an official cap, Taira has the distinction of being a one-time Fiji international, having represented the Bati in a World Cup warm-up match against England in October 2022.
Upon signing, Taira expressed his excitement about returning to the club where he began his professional journey, stating, “I’m buzzing to be back at the place I started my professional career, and I find it fitting that it’s where I will end it.” He noted the potential in his teammates from last season and expressed his desire to contribute to the team’s progression in the upcoming season.
Rochdale finished third in League 1 last year but fell short in the playoffs against Hunslet, who ultimately won promotion. Head coach Gary Thornton welcomed Taira back, highlighting his previous popularity and respected status among fans and players alike. Thornton emphasized that Taira’s experience and intense playing style will be crucial for the team’s success in 2025.
With Taira’s experience and enthusiasm promising to positively influence the team’s dynamics, fans can look forward to an exciting season ahead. This return not only signifies Taira’s commitment to his career but also reinforces the team’s resolve to rise to new challenges in the upcoming season.
