Roblox is set to introduce its age verification system in three countries, including Australia, coinciding with the impending enforcement of the federal government’s ban on social media access for individuals under 16. The new age verification feature will require users to confirm their age to utilize private messaging with other players, aimed at enhancing user safety.
In addition to age verification, Roblox plans to roll out age-based chat functionalities, allowing users to interact with others within their similar age groups. These systems are expected to be implemented in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands starting the first week of December, ahead of a broader global launch scheduled for early January.
Australia’s ban on social media for users under the age of 16 is set to take effect on December 10. While Roblox has yet to be included in this ban list, the platform is proactively addressing concerns surrounding child safety amidst rising scrutiny and legal challenges related to its practices.
As the gaming industry grapples with child safety issues, Roblox’s initiatives reflect a commitment to creating a safer environment for its younger audience. The combination of age verification and age-restricted communication could serve as a model for other platforms, reinforcing efforts to protect minors online while allowing them to connect with peers in a secure manner.
