One of the two men charged with the aggravated robbery of a 57-year-old woman and her disabled son remains at large. Jashneel Pillay did not appear in court yesterday, prompting the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest.
During a session with Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, Mosese Vuniwai was present to face charges related to the incident that allegedly took place on January 22, 2023. According to the charges, the two men, along with a third accomplice who has already pleaded guilty, broke into the victims’ bedroom during the night. One assailant reportedly held a cane knife to the woman’s neck while another restrained her, as they searched the home for valuables.
Police reports indicate that Pillay may currently be located in Nadi, though this information is yet to be confirmed. State prosecutor Pooha Mishra detailed that two bench warrant reports had been filed, and she requested additional time for the execution of these warrants. The next court date for the judgment and the bench warrant has been set for February 24 of next year.
Meanwhile, the third defendant, Joseva Tuidama, has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison, with a non-parole period of four years, after pleading guilty to the robbery charge last November.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges related to crime and the legal system. It also underscores the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies in ensuring justice is served. As law enforcement continues efforts to apprehend those still at large, there is hope for the victims to receive the closure and justice they deserve.
