Robbers Face Justice: Shocking Verdict in High Court Case

Spread the love

The High Court in Lautoka has found Roneel Kumar and Gaston Kean guilty of aggravated robbery and theft after a burglary that occurred on March 27, four years ago. Justice Aruna Aluthge announced the verdict, underlining the substantial evidence presented by the prosecution, which included vital CCTV footage from the crime scene.

The pair unlawfully entered the home of Diana Ali Nand, stealing a laptop, $5,750 in cash, a gold watch, two gold bangles, and a gold chain. The prosecution successfully demonstrated that Kumar and Kean intended to permanently dispossess the owner of her belongings.

The defense arguments were deemed unconvincing; Justice Aluthge pointed out that Kumar’s alibi and the testimony provided by his partner, Astika, were not credible. The court highlighted that Astika’s testimony appeared biased due to her vested interest in protecting Kumar and inconsistencies in her statements.

Additionally, Justice Aluthge remarked that Kumar attempted to sway a key witness by sending money via MPAiSA, which further damaged his credibility and reinforced the prosecution’s case. Kean’s alibi was also dismissed; the court found no support for his claim of being born without a right thumb, especially in light of the CCTV evidence that depicted an individual resembling him.

Both men were found guilty on all charges, with Justice Aluthge concluding that the evidence overwhelmingly confirmed their role in the crime. The court is set to announce their sentences on Friday.

In light of the court’s decision, this case serves as a poignant reminder of the legal system’s commitment to justice and the importance of safeguarding individuals’ rights and belongings. It emphasizes the power of evidence in the judicial process, reinforcing the notion that crimes have consequences. The upcoming sentencing may provide closure to the victim and the community, showcasing the efforts to maintain safety and security.
