An 80-year-old man has tragically lost his life following a vehicular accident, while another driver has been taken to the hospital with stable injuries. The incident occurred when both drivers attempted to overtake each other, resulting in their vehicles veering off the road into a ditch. The victim, hailing from Suva, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Navua Hospital.
The Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, expressed his concern regarding the uptick in road accidents and fatalities, particularly over the past few days, which have seen three fatalities along with multiple serious accidents involving pedestrians. SSP Divuana reported an additional fatal incident in Wainadoi, Navua, highlighting the urgent need for increased road safety awareness.
Despite ongoing campaigns via billboards, media, and social media platforms aimed at promoting safe driving habits, incidents linked to speeding continue to persist. SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of practicing road safety at all levels and urged parents and guardians to lead by example to instill safe behaviors in their children.
Encouragingly, the current national road death toll stands at 48, a significant decrease from last year’s toll of 78 during the same period. This indicates some progress in road safety, but the ongoing challenges highlight the necessity for continued efforts in promoting awareness and safe practices among all road users. As the community reflects on these incidents, there is hope that increased vigilance and education will lead to further improvements in road safety moving forward.
