Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the Cabinet’s approval to issue a State Grant to Robert Pearson Miller, which is connected to the conversion of a previously closed road designated as Lot 1 SO 2991. This decision stems from discussions dating back to the early 1970s, when the government acquired this land for the construction of the Suva-Nadi Highway.
With the highway now fully operational, Rabuka noted that the rationale for maintaining the Closed Old Queens Road is no longer applicable. Therefore, the government has authorized the land to revert to its former tenure for rightful usage. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to efficient land management and honoring historical agreements while addressing present community needs.
Additionally, this move aligns with Fiji’s broader infrastructure efforts, particularly the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This significant initiative, funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative with an investment of FJD $300 million, aims to upgrade transportation networks that primarily benefit rural communities and foster local economic growth.
Rabuka emphasized the importance of improved connectivity and infrastructure as strategies to create economic opportunities and empower local communities. He expressed optimism that such infrastructure developments will enhance the livelihoods of rural residents, contributing to overall community improvement.
In summary, the approval of the State Grant marks a significant move towards effective land management and reinforces the government’s commitment to infrastructure development. As these projects progress, there is a hopeful outlook for economic empowerment and improved living standards for Fiji’s rural population, suggesting a positive trajectory for the nation’s development.
