Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is undertaking a two-day trip to the Northern Division to assess the proposed upgrades to the roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is joined by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.
This significant project is supported by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), aligning with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With a budget estimated at FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is poised to be a key development under this initiative in Fiji.
During the visit, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the necessity of integrating local community input to ensure that the road upgrades not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for local residents throughout the construction phase. Among the critical areas inspected were 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road (from Bua to Nasolo) and 35 kilometers of the Nabalebale to Dogoru (Wailevu West Coast Road).
Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, joined the tour and offered technical and logistical insights about the project. Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing led by Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Jovesa Naqarikau, which highlighted the economic potential of the region, anticipated to benefit significantly from the upgraded infrastructure.
Ambassador Lee expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting its potential to enhance infrastructure and stimulate regional development. He pointed out that the improved roads are likely to bolster vital sectors, including tourism and renewable energy initiatives like hydropower, while also improving access and connectivity for rural communities.
This project represents a tangible step towards improving Fiji’s infrastructure, creating job opportunities, and fostering economic growth in the Northern Division. It’s an encouraging sign of collaboration and investment that can drive progress in the region.
In summary, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, backed by significant Chinese investment, is set to transform the infrastructure landscape in Fiji, offering enhanced connectivity, local employment, and economic growth opportunities for the community.
