Public service providers in Labasa are urgently calling for improvements to rural road access ahead of the upcoming National Budget announcement. Mahen Prasad, Chair of the Labasa Taxi Association, notes that the poor conditions of local roads have led some taxi drivers to avoid certain routes altogether, significantly impacting their operations and inflating repair costs.
Prasad highlights the dire state of Namoli Road, mentioning poor drainage and deteriorating road conditions complicating access, especially for those needing transport to the local hospital. “It’s in a very bad condition… I’m really happy if the government can look at that,” he said, underscoring the need for immediate governmental attention.
Mukesh Chand, President of Carrier Operators, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the risks associated with crossing damaged roads and calling for adjustments to pensions amid rising living costs. Their concerns are part of a larger dialogue being held across Fiji, as citizens rally to bring urgent infrastructure needs to the forefront in the national budget, which is scheduled to be announced on Friday.
Earlier consultations have shown overwhelming community support for improving infrastructure, where residents have highlighted their challenges related to neglected roads and unreliable electricity supply. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has previously assured participants that their voices will guide budget planning, offering hope for a more inclusive development approach.
As these citizens advocate for better infrastructure, there is a growing optimism that their persistent calls may lead to significant improvements in their quality of life and access to essential services. The current discussions about the budget represent not just a request for funding, but an opportunity for the government to demonstrate its commitment to addressing the pressing infrastructure challenges facing these communities, facilitating necessary upgrades that can benefit all Fijians.
