The Republic of Fiji Military Forces is currently focusing on reconciliation efforts, drawing participation from various familiar faces in the community. Although revisiting past traumas can be challenging for participants, there seems to be a growing sense of forgiveness and acceptance surrounding these initiatives. This dialogue aims to address the pain and loss experienced by many, ultimately paving the way for a hopeful future for both the military and the nation as a whole.
However, amidst these significant developments, we must not overlook an urgent concern: road safety. Over this long weekend, marked by the Diwali celebrations, there has been another tragic loss of life on Fiji’s roads. A man in his 30s tragically died due to an accident in Nasinu early yesterday morning. According to police reports, he was driving towards Suva when his vehicle collided with another car operated by a man of similar age.
The Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, has emphasized the necessity for all drivers to remain vigilant, especially as police investigations into the accident are ongoing. This unfortunate event underscores the critical importance of road safety, particularly as families prepare to return home from Diwali festivities.
This incident follows another sorrowful event where a Rakiraki man, Salesh Prasad, lost his life on Thursday night in Ba while attempting to travel home for the celebrations. Prasad’s vehicle veered off the road, resulting in a tragic accident that claimed his life at the scene.
As of now, the road death toll has reached 46 this year, a significant decrease from 68 deaths during the same period last year. This decline is a positive indicator, yet the need for cautious driving remains paramount. It is crucial for all drivers and road users to prioritize safety by adhering to speed regulations, practicing defensive driving, and avoiding distractions such as mobile phone use. It is also essential to refrain from drinking and driving and to signal intentions when changing lanes.
Additionally, taking regular breaks to combat fatigue and remaining attentive to the presence of other road users can significantly reduce accidents. By making a commitment to safe travel choices, we can all contribute to ensuring that we reach our destinations safely.
As we navigate our journeys, let us remember the importance of road safety and the vital role it plays in protecting lives. With collective effort and diligence, we can aim for a brighter and safer future on our roads.
