The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Fiji Police Force are set to increase traffic patrols and establish checkpoints in high-risk zones and accident-prone intersections to enhance road safety. This move comes in response to a serious traffic accident that occurred yesterday afternoon in Vitogo, along Kings Road, involving a bus and a twin cab utility vehicle, resulting in 18 individuals hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital.

Transport Minister Filipe Tuisawau expressed his condolences to those affected and emphasized the critical need for all road users to practice heightened vigilance and compliance with road safety regulations. He noted that the National Joint Operations Order, which involves collaboration between the LTA, Fiji Police, and municipal enforcement officers, is designed to improve road safety, reduce road fatalities, and ensure strict adherence to traffic rules.

This initiative comes at a crucial time as the festive season approaches, a period expected to see increased road traffic due to holiday activities, family reunions, and celebrations. The operation will run from November 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024.

Despite the recent accident, it’s worth noting that as of November 11, the total road fatalities for the year stand at 51, marking a decrease from the 71 fatalities reported during the same period last year. This indicates a positive trend in road safety, and the upcoming enforcement efforts aim to further reduce these numbers.

In summary, the collaborative approach between the LTA and Fiji Police is a proactive step toward safeguarding the community during a busy travel season. With enhanced patrols and a focus on road safety adherence, there is hope for even better outcomes in the weeks and months ahead.
