The Chief Executive Officer of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Fiji, Irimaia Rokosawa, has stressed the paramount importance of vehicle maintenance and responsible driving practices for operators of commercial vehicles. His remarks follow a tragic incident in Savusavu where a man tragically lost his life after being crushed by a truck.
Rokosawa highlighted the dangers of speeding, mechanical failure, and human error, emphasizing that proper vehicle upkeep, appropriate loading practices, and driver vigilance are essential components of road safety. “Every vehicle owner and operator must uphold this responsibility,” he stated, underscoring the collective obligation to ensure safety on the roads.
This incident isn’t isolated; it resonates with ongoing concerns regarding reckless driving behaviors that have led to an alarming number of fatalities in recent months. With the current death toll on the roads standing at 61 so far this year—a decline from last year’s 76—it remains critical for all road users to adopt safe practices. “Meeting delivery deadlines is not enough; we must also ensure everyone – drivers, pedestrians, and passengers – gets home safely,” Rokosawa added.
In the light of recent events, the LTA is committed to enhancing safety measures and increasing collaboration with law enforcement to conduct roadside checks, aiming to identify unsafe vehicles and combat reckless driving. Educational campaigns aimed at fostering a culture of caution and responsibility on the roads are also a priority for the LTA, promoting the idea that every road user has a role to play in preventing tragic incidents.
By raising awareness and advocating for shared accountability, there is hope that these initiatives will lead to safer roads for all Fijians. The emphasis on proactive measures is a positive indication of the LTA’s dedication to improving overall road safety and protecting lives.
