Road Safety Crisis: 603 Lives Lost in Avoidable Accidents

A total of 603 individuals have lost their lives in road accidents since 2014, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the Director of Traffic for the Fiji Police Force. He shared this information during the conclusion of National Road Safety Week at the FMF Hibiscus Festival.

SSP Divuana emphasized that these tragic losses were often the result of avoidable circumstances, attributed largely to poor decision-making and a lack of respect for the safety of others on the roads. He noted that the statistics reveal that the victims include drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and riders, highlighting the wide range of individuals vulnerable to road accidents and fatalities.

He stressed the importance of changing attitudes towards road safety and urged adults to model responsible behavior for their children in order to foster a culture of safety on the roads.
