The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are intensifying efforts to improve road safety by deploying additional traffic patrols and checkpoints in areas known for high risks and frequent accidents. This initiative comes in the wake of a serious traffic incident on Kings Road in Vitogo that left 18 individuals hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital, involving a collision between a bus and a utility vehicle.
Minister of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Filipe Tuisawau, expressed his sympathies to those affected by the accident and emphasized the critical need for all drivers and road users to adhere strictly to road safety regulations. He mentioned that the National Joint Operations Order, which includes collaboration among the LTA, Fiji Police, and Municipal Council enforcement officers, aims to enhance road safety, reduce fatalities, and enforce compliance with road rules.
This joint operation is particularly timely as it will run from November 1 to January 31 of the following year, coinciding with the festive season when road traffic typically increases due to holiday activities, family gatherings, and celebrations. As a good sign, road fatalities have decreased to 51 this year, down from 71 during the same timeframe last year.
This increased vigilance and proactive measures can help ensure safer roads during a time when many are traveling for festivities, allowing families to celebrate together with peace of mind.
In summary, the collaborative efforts of LTA and policing agencies aim to create safer roads in Fiji, especially as the holiday season approaches, highlighting a commitment to protecting lives and enhancing community safety.
