Road Safety Crackdown: LTA Takes Action Amid Fatality Decline

Over the past year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has revoked 114 drivers’ licenses and suspended 13 others, according to Acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa.

As of August 27, the number of road fatalities in Fiji stands at 38, a significant decrease from the 62 fatalities reported in the same timeframe last year.

However, Rokosawa emphasized that every loss of life is a tragedy, and the LTA, in partnership with the Fiji Police Force and other key stakeholders, remains dedicated to reducing road fatalities and ensuring safety for all Fijians on the roads.

“Road fatalities often result from preventable actions such as speeding, drunk driving, pedestrian negligence, and other irresponsible driving behaviors,” he stated.

Each statistic highlights a life lost, which is why the LTA has intensified efforts during National Road Safety Week to promote widespread awareness of the importance of following road safety regulations.

The authority’s road safety education and enforcement teams have been working diligently around the clock to ensure that safety messages reach every segment of the community.

Through community outreach, educational initiatives, and strict enforcement measures, these teams are emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility among all road users—be it pedestrians, passengers, or drivers.

Rokosawa noted that the National Road Safety Week serves as an essential platform to unite all stakeholders in addressing road accidents. Along with the Fiji Police Force, the LTA is focusing on highlighting the consequences of unsafe driving and the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring road safety.

While education and awareness are crucial aspects of the LTA’s strategy, Rokosawa pointed out that enforcement is also vital in deterring dangerous driving behaviors. The authority is committed to holding offenders accountable through its showcause process.
