A 60-year-old man has tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle on Yasiyasi Road in Nasinu on Wednesday night. The incident has prompted the Land Transport Authority’s CEO Irimaia Rokosawa to urge all road users to exercise greater caution, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
Rokosawa expressed concern over the rising statistics of pedestrian-related fatalities, highlighting that pedestrian safety is just as crucial as driver responsibility. He emphasized that roads are shared spaces, and it is vital for pedestrians to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of accidents. As part of his message, he called on families and communities to support elderly individuals when crossing streets, and urged pedestrians to use designated crossings while avoiding jaywalking, especially in busy areas.
Furthermore, he reminded drivers to avoid speeding and careless driving, advocating for a cultural shift towards road safety where all users take accountability for their safety as well as that of others. Presently, the road death toll stands at eight fatalities this year, a notable decrease from 17 during the same timeframe last year. The primary causes of this year’s incidents include speeding, careless driving, pedestrian faults, and improper overtaking.
The earlier reports reinforce the call for road safety awareness, stressing the importance of a collective effort to reduce accidents. They note that the current statistics reflect a positive trend, indicating that heightened awareness and public education on road safety can have a significant impact. The hope is that continued attention to these matters will lead to further improvements in road safety and help avoid similar tragedies in the future.
