The Land Transport Authority is urging all road users nationwide to remain vigilant as severe weather, including intense rainfall and flash flooding, continues to affect various regions. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted that these difficult weather conditions significantly elevate the risks associated with road safety, prompting a call for both drivers and pedestrians to exercise increased caution when traveling.

Rokosawa stressed the importance of vigilance, saying, “The combination of heavy rain, reduced visibility, and flooded roads can create hazardous conditions.” He reminded everyone to prioritize safety at all times. The Authority is advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in areas prone to flooding. If travel is essential, individuals should keep up with the latest weather alerts and road closures while staying alert to changing conditions.

The Chief Executive also cautioned about potential sudden road closures, detours, and hazards such as fallen debris and washed-out roads. He expressed concern that despite the ongoing adverse weather, some drivers continue to ignore safety warnings by speeding and driving recklessly through floodwaters, thereby endangering themselves and others.

In response, the Authority will take action against those who flout traffic regulations and compromise public safety, ensuring that penalties are implemented to deter dangerous behavior. Drivers are reminded to strictly adhere to speed limits, adapt their driving to the current weather, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, use headlights in poor visibility, and avoid overtaking unless absolutely safe.

Rokosawa affirmed the Authority’s commitment to prioritizing public safety during these challenging weather conditions, calling for collective responsibility on the roads.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and awareness while navigating the roads under difficult circumstances. As communities come together to support one another during adverse weather, it is hopeful that road safety practices will become even more ingrained, leading to a greater culture of responsibility and care among all road users.

Summary: The Land Transport Authority is urging vigilance among road users due to severe weather conditions impacting safety. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa has advised against unnecessary travel, cautioned about potential hazards, and emphasized the importance of safe driving practices. The Authority is committed to enforcing traffic laws to ensure public safety.
