The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling on all road users, including parents, guardians, and drivers, to exercise caution and vigilance, especially when it comes to schoolchildren crossing streets. This plea comes following the tragic death of an eight-year-old student in Dreketi, Labasa. Preliminary police reports indicate that the young boy was struck by an oncoming vehicle as he unexpectedly crossed the road after disembarking from a licensed transport carrier. The force of the impact was significant, propelling him approximately 24 meters from the site of the collision.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed his deepest condolences to the grieving family and emphasized that this incident should serve as an urgent reminder for all road users to be extra vigilant. He acknowledged that children’s unpredictable behavior heightens the need for drivers to be especially attentive in areas where young pedestrians are present.
This unfortunate incident mirrors a previous tragic case in Sabeto, Nadi, where a 12-year-old lost his life in comparable circumstances after falling from a moving vehicle that struck potholes. In both cases, LTA officials have reiterated that road safety is a collective responsibility. Drivers are encouraged to reduce their speed, keep their vehicles under control, and ensure that all passengers are properly secured.
Currently, the road death toll stands at three compared to 15 at the same time last year, highlighting an urgent need for continued efforts to enhance road safety and reduce risks for all users. The LTA’s emphasis on vigilance and responsibility aims not just to prevent further tragedies but to cultivate a culture of safety among all road users.
There is hope that by raising awareness about road safety and adhering to established guidelines, it can lead to safer travel conditions for everyone, particularly for our children, who are the most vulnerable on the roads.
