The Fiji Police Force has reported a concerning number of serious road accidents in the early months of 2025, with a total of 13 incidents recorded so far. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, Director of Traffic and Transport Control, highlighted that as the school year approaches, prioritizing road safety is essential for all drivers.
Out of these serious accidents, 11 incidents involved drivers losing control of their vehicles, often attributed to speeding and fatigue. SSP Divuana urged cohesive action from the public, reiterating, “If drivers can plan their trips well, take breaks during long journeys, and avoid rushing, they can significantly enhance their safety as well as the safety of others.”
A reassuring aspect of the year’s statistics is that there have been no fatalities recorded thus far, a positive shift compared to two fatalities during the same time last year. This decrease demonstrates the impact of heightened awareness around road safety, as the Fiji Police Force continues to promote responsible driving habits through various community engagement initiatives.
Discussions surrounding road safety have gained prominence, particularly in light of upcoming community events that may increase traffic volume. SSP Divuana emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits, asserting that speeding puts everyone at risk on the road. He pointed out the critical role that time management plays in safe driving, urging drivers to be mindful and plan their travels in advance.
In summary, while the number of serious accidents is alarming, the absence of fatalities provides hope for a future where road safety can improve through collective effort. The Fiji Police are committed to fostering a culture of responsibility on the roads, and it is essential for all road users to recognize their role in ensuring safety for themselves and others. By fostering safe driving practices, Fiji can further reduce accident rates and enhance the overall safety of its roads.
