The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling on all road users to exercise heightened caution and responsibility after two unfortunate deaths in their 60s occurred in separate road incidents in the Western Division. LTA’s Chief Executive, Irimaia Rokosawa, expressed that these incidents are a stark reminder of the need for road users to reassess their decisions while driving.
Rokosawa emphasized the recurring issue that, despite numerous safety campaigns and public awareness efforts, some drivers still neglect fundamental road safety practices. Speeding and reckless driving behaviors must cease, he insisted. Early investigations into both cases in Lautoka and Rakiraki suggest that insufficient steering control was a significant factor in these tragic occurrences.
He noted that these incidents are part of a disturbing trend, as there have been various other serious road accidents leading to hospitalizations, including those involving children. To combat this, the LTA is urging passengers and pedestrians to participate in promoting safer roads. They encourage individuals to speak out against dangerous driving, utilize designated crossing points, and stay vigilant in traffic areas.
The agency’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety is crucial, especially during busy periods like the upcoming festive season, where celebrations often lead to increased travel. The hope is that with continued public cooperation and higher standards of accountability, Fijian roads can be made safer for everyone.
Promoting responsible driving is not just the responsibility of authorities but requires a collective effort from all to make impactful changes. Each person’s decisions on the road can significantly influence the safety of everyone traveling, and fostering a culture centered on safety can prevent further tragedies in the future.
