Road Safety Alert: Calls for Action Against Reckless Driving

Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, is urging the Government to take strong action against the alarming trend of reckless speeding among truck and bus drivers, as well as other heavy vehicles. Lal’s comments come in the wake of a recent accident involving a bus operated by Goundar Shipping Ltd in Lautoka, highlighting what he describes as irresponsible driving behavior.

Lal emphasized that the ongoing issue of speeding cannot be overlooked any longer and poses a significant threat to the safety of all road users. He argued that it is time for more than just awareness campaigns and called for immediate and decisive measures to be taken.

He proposed that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) implement strict regulations for all public service vehicles (PSVs) and trucks, suggesting the mandatory installation of speed limiters or Speed Lock Systems. These devices would restrict the maximum speed of such vehicles to 80 km/h, in order to align with national speed limits. While acknowledging that some transport vehicles currently have a speed limit of 60 km/h, Lal believes a standard limit of 80 km/h would still allow for flexibility while minimizing the risk of accidents associated with speeding.

Lal underlined that many of the recent accidents were preventable and stressed the urgency of acting before another tragedy occurs. He called upon the LTA, the government, and all relevant stakeholders to prioritize road safety and take the necessary steps to protect lives.

In summary, Lal’s proposals aim to enhance road safety through the introduction of speed limiters in heavy vehicles, advocating for prompt action to prevent further accidents. His stance reflects a growing concern for public safety and the need for reliable transport regulations.

This push for stricter regulation brings hope for a safer driving environment. If implemented, these measures could lead to a significant reduction in speeding-related accidents and foster a culture of safety on the roads. The commitment to prioritizing the lives of citizens is a positive step forward in addressing this pressing issue.
