Concerns have been raised about the state of road repairs in Savusavu, Fiji, with criticism coming from a former road supervisor and contractor, Abdul Shah. Shah claims that the repeated patching of potholes often fails, as they reappear after even light rain, leading him to label the current practices as a misallocation of public funds. He expressed worries about the structural integrity of new footpaths, specifically pointing out the absence of steel reinforcement in the construction, which he argues could lead to their failure in adverse weather conditions.

In response to Shah’s criticisms, Tevita Waqatoga, manager of the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) in Savusavu, explained that current pothole repairs are merely temporary measures. He clarified that the FRA is in the process of making permanent improvements using stronger materials that adhere to standard testing and are designed to withstand the local climatic conditions. Waqatoga acknowledged the environmental challenges in Savusavu, particularly its heavy rainfall, which accelerates the deterioration of road materials.

This situation mirrors broader concerns within Fiji, highlighted by previous reports regarding inadequate road maintenance across various regions. Local residents have consistently voiced frustrations over poor road conditions leading to vehicle damage and safety hazards. A notable call to action was made by Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, who emphasized the necessity of investing in existing infrastructure rather than focusing on new road construction.

Interestingly, the issues surrounding road quality resonate with ongoing governmental efforts to enhance infrastructure reliability amid financial and operational challenges faced by the FRA. This includes a focus on accountability and quality in project management. Waqatoga mentioned plans to introduce monitoring mechanisms to ensure higher quality work, aligning with the community’s hope for effective infrastructure management.

The renewed commitment from the FRA to address these longstanding issues signals a positive direction for improving road safety and infrastructure in Fiji. By taking decisive steps toward sustainable road repairs and maintenance, the government can enhance the quality of life for its citizens and maintain the integrity of its vital transport networks.
