The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that it is set to reintroduce road marshals in its upcoming budget plan, aimed at enhancing road safety through increased visibility and enforcement. Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa revealed that the LTA has submitted a budget request for nearly half a million dollars to fund this initiative, emphasizing the need for greater presence on the streets to ensure compliance with traffic rules.
Rokosawa noted that many drivers tend to ignore traffic regulations unless they see enforcement personnel present, making visibility a crucial objective in their strategy. The initiative is part of a broader effort to tackle the worrying trend of road incidents, particularly highlighted by a recent accident in Navuniasi where 13 students were injured due to reckless driving.
In conjunction with the return of road marshals, LTA plans to enhance educational campaigns on road safety, particularly focusing on younger demographics. Manager for Road Safety Education Watilala Fonu highlighted the importance of promoting safe road behaviors and educating children rather than merely addressing the aftermath of accidents. She pointed out that increasing visibility is vital for fostering more responsible driving habits across the community.
This proactive approach is a continuation of LTA’s commitment to ensure safety on Fiji’s roadways, especially during periods of increased traffic, like the festive season. The combined efforts of education, increased enforcement, and the visibility of road marshals hope to cultivate a culture of accountability among drivers, ultimately aiming for a significant reduction in road accidents.
With these initiatives, the LTA is not just focusing on punitive measures but is also invested in educational outreach that empowers individuals, particularly the younger generation, to prioritize safety on the roads. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility, the LTA aims to create a safer environment for all road users.
