Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has extended his support to the people of Waibasaga Village in Muaira, Naitasiri, by promising to provide a fibreglass boat and engine as a temporary solution to aid villagers in crossing the Wainimala River. His commitment comes after a surprise visit to the riverbank, spurred by viral social media posts and media coverage that highlighted the risks residents face while attempting to cross the river for essential services.
During his visit, Rabuka met with local leaders, including the village reverend and district officer, to better understand the challenges posed by the river, which has long been a barrier for residents. He acknowledged the concerns raised by the community, stating, “We may sit comfortably in our offices, but we don’t realize how problems outside are until we go down there and see what is happening.”
A villager expressed their astonishment at the Prime Minister’s visit and shared their gratitude that years of requests for improved infrastructure, including a bridge, are finally gaining attention. The Prime Minister assured that the promised boat would be available to the village after his return from Indonesia.
This initiative aligns with broader infrastructure improvement efforts being made in Fiji, as seen in similar responses to rural community needs across the country. Previous articles have reported on the urgent requirement for a bridge in Waibasaga and other villages, reflecting systemic infrastructure challenges faced by rural communities. For instance, just recently, the completion of a bridge in Naseyani Village has been celebrated as a significant safety enhancement, especially for children and vulnerable residents.
The government’s recent focus on infrastructure development and rural connectivity signals a positive direction toward better living conditions for residents. There is now hope in the community that such initiatives will not only address immediate transportation challenges but will also lead to long-term solutions improving access to essential services.
With the Prime Minister’s proactive approach and the increasing community advocacy for better infrastructure, there lies a promising pathway for enhanced safety and quality of life for Waibasaga and other affected villages across Fiji.
