The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has issued a warning for residents living near the Sabeto River, advising them not to use the river until further notice. This precaution follows reports of contamination that reportedly led to the discovery of dead fish and eels floating in the water.

The mining company Lion One Ltd, which operates in the vicinity, acknowledged that water containing slightly elevated copper levels had been released from their containment ponds. They asserted that the environmental impact is localized within the Special Mining Lease (SML) boundary and has not affected areas downstream.

In light of the incident, the MECC is conducting thorough testing to locate the precise source of contamination. Lion One Ltd is obligated to ensure that any discharged effluent meets the National Liquid Waste Standards as per the conditions outlined in their Environment Impact Assessment. The Ministry has assured the public that comprehensive efforts are being made to protect environmental safety and community health.

This situation echoes past incidents where community vigilance and proactive measures from the government played significant roles in addressing environmental issues, such as previous oil discharge cases involving Energy Fiji Limited (EFL). In those instances, local residents reported pollution which sparked immediate investigations, highlighting the importance of effective communication and collaboration between companies and the communities they affect.

Lion One Ltd’s commitment to address this recent spill and collaborate with government agencies reflects a dedication to better environmental stewardship. The involvement of the MECC and the local community offers hope that swift actions will lead to the restoration of the river’s health and safety for residents in the area.

It’s a crucial moment for both the mining company and the community to reinforce their relationship and develop sustainable practices that prioritize ecological integrity and public welfare. Through cooperation, there remains optimism for a resolution that safeguards the environment for future generations.
