Yaqona theft has become a pressing concern in Taveuni, occurring at an alarming average of two incidents per day. In response, the Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, has assembled a special taskforce to combat this growing issue. The police are enhancing their visibility through extensive patrols in the farming areas of Qila, Masasa, Ura, Qarawalu, Soqulu, and Salialevu, where they have already begun engaging with local yaqona farmers to offer support and reassurance.

Yaqona, also known as kava, is a vital crop for many local farmers, serving as their primary source of income. The recent spike in thefts not only threatens their livelihoods but also poses significant challenges to the community as a whole. Superintendent Soqosoqo reported that the police have made several arrests over the past week and are actively pursuing leads to apprehend those responsible for these crimes.

In tackling this issue, the police are focusing on detaining not just the offenders but also the receivers of stolen yaqona. The use of K9 units has been introduced to assist in tracking down perpetrators, demonstrating the police’s commitment to disrupting criminal networks.

The demand for yaqona remains robust, as Taveuni farmers supply not only their local market but also regions beyond, including Labasa, where prices have recently increased due to adverse weather conditions affecting supply. Thus, the repercussions of theft are felt far and wide, impacting both farmers and consumers.

SP Soqosoqo emphasized the pressing need for community vigilance, encouraging residents to report any suspicious individuals in their neighborhoods who may be linked to potential thefts. This collaborative approach is essential as the police continue their efforts to restore a sense of security for Taveuni’s hardworking farmers.

This proactive strategy, combined with community involvement, provides hope for a safer future for agricultural practices on the island. As local authorities and police work together to combat crime, it reflects a community dedicated to protecting its resources and supporting its farmers. Through these joint efforts, Taveuni can aim to reclaim the safety and stability that its farmers deserve, fostering a more secure agricultural sector moving forward.
