Rising Tide of Non-Sexual Violence: November Stats Reveal Alarming Trends

A 40-year-old man faces charges of assault causing actual bodily harm against his 38-year-old wife. Similarly, a 38-year-old man has been charged with the assault of a 41-year-old woman, highlighting ongoing concerns about domestic violence. These cases are part of the statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for November 2024.

In a separate incident, a 49-year-old man was charged with intent to cause grievous harm after allegedly stabbing a victim in the back with scissors during an altercation. Additionally, a 41-year-old man was also charged with an act intended to cause grievous harm, but the case was discontinued due to the victim being unreachable.

The report also details various incidents of theft and burglary, where cash and other items were reported stolen. Notably, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were charged with burglary and theft, while two men aged 34 and 29 were charged with aggravated burglary after allegedly breaking into Tilak High School in Lautoka, where they caused significant damage to property and school furniture. Meanwhile, two 19-year-old men broke into Kids First Kindergarten in Suva, stealing educational materials and equipment.

In total, 21 individuals were charged with 27 counts of non-sexual violence offences during November, which included serious crimes such as murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and burglary. Out of these offences, there were 13 victims reported. Among the accused, two individuals were juveniles, and in some cases, the victims were related to the assailants.

This report serves as a critical reminder of the work still needed to combat violence in communities and protect vulnerable individuals. It highlights the importance of addressing issues related to domestic violence and ensuring that victims receive the support they need.

Positive steps can be taken through community engagement and increased awareness on preventing violence. Local organizations and authorities are encouraged to establish programs that support both prevention and intervention, fostering a safer environment for all.
