Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has issued a strong call to action regarding the rising challenges in the Pacific region, emphasizing that the “Blue Pacific” must take control of its security future. Speaking at the 2025 Pacific Regional and National Security Conference in Suva, he pointed out that the Pacific has been historically mismanaged, often serving as a battleground for external conflicts and experimentation with dangerous technologies.
Rabuka shared alarming insights on the current state of the Pacific Ocean, highlighting the effects of climate change, which have exacerbated vulnerabilities in the region. He acknowledged that while Fiji’s 2024 Foreign Policy White Paper has noted various threats beyond national borders, including economic instability and division, the focus must now shift towards securing peace and stability within the Pacific neighborhood.
The Prime Minister spoke about what he describes as a “polycrisis” impacting the region, which includes climate change, transnational crime, and economic pressures. He underscored the urgent need for both national and regional strategies to combat these challenges. “I feel a particular responsibility as the Prime Minister of Fiji,” Rabuka said, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts with fellow Pacific Island nations to build resilience and stability.
The emphasis on regional solidarity echoes previous discussions led by Rabuka about the importance of a united Pacific voice in facing global challenges. His messages from the recent National Press Club address bolster this theme, focusing on sustainable resource management and security against illegal activities such as fishing and drug trafficking.
Rabuka’s vision for a cooperative approach among Pacific nations bears a sense of hope. He believes that standing united, with a shared vision and values, can significantly enhance the Pacific’s ability to navigate both current and future challenges. As regional leaders prepare to meet at the Pacific Islands Forum, there is an optimistic outlook for a focused and coordinated effort towards ensuring a secure and prosperous future for all nations within the Pacific.
