“After mum passed away, I couldn’t go back to school,” Jacob reflected. The loss of his mother’s routine care and love made it challenging for him to find his footing. Recently, he was spotted selling tuna by the roadside in Wailekutu, a testament to his determination. “I am selling tuna to earn some money, help the family, and buy more engine oil so we can go out to sea this afternoon and fish,” he stated, demonstrating a proactive approach to life’s challenges.
Rather than succumb to despair, Jacob joined a group of fishermen associated with Handfishing Fiji, which provides unemployed youths and men with employment opportunities in deep-sea fishing. This initiative empowers individuals like Jacob to harness the ocean’s resources and work towards a brighter future.
