A dermatologist from Twomey Hospital, Dr. Lusiane Tunisau, has raised alarming awareness regarding the evolving field of dermatology and the emergence of deep fungal infections, particularly chromoblastomycosis, a debilitating condition affecting patients’ quality of life. Dr. Tunisau highlighted that the visible effects of this disease often lead to social exclusion for those affected, with some patients even remaining in the hospital until they passed away due to difficulties reintegrating into society.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by chromoblastomycosis, Tunisau stated that measures are in place to provide medications to afflicted individuals, with ongoing efforts to include one particular treatment on the essential drug list. Despite the high costs associated with treatment, she expressed a commitment to improving access so that those in need can receive the appropriate care.
In light of these issues, Tunisau underlined the importance of skincare and urged people to seek medical assistance promptly if they experience any symptoms of skin diseases. Her remarks echo the sentiments expressed by the Acting Medical Superintendent of Twomey Hospital, Dr. Emosi Bainivalu, who has also emphasized the rising occurrence of neglected tropical diseases like leprosy and scabies across the region. Both health professionals are advocating for increased public awareness and education about dermatological issues, while the Ministry of Health continues to stress the necessity of integrating skin health into broader public health discussions.
The discussion is timely, especially given Fiji’s commitment to enhancing healthcare capacity and addressing skin diseases as aligned with international health initiatives. The collective efforts of healthcare authorities, communities, and global partners aim to build a healthier environment and improved health outcomes for those impacted by skin conditions. This proactive approach underlines a hopeful trajectory toward fostering stronger community support and awareness in tackling dermatological challenges.
