The Acting Medical Superintendent of Twomey Hospital, Dr. Emosi Bainivalu, has highlighted a worrisome increase in neglected tropical diseases such as filariasis, leprosy, and scabies in the region. He attributes this rise to a significant lack of public awareness, with many individuals excessively relying on herbal remedies rather than seeking timely medical attention, which can lead to worsening health conditions.
Dr. Bainivalu emphasized the importance of enhancing healthcare capacity at the sub-divisional level for the treatment of these diseases, advocating for preventative measures and community education. He mentioned that early intervention is crucial, especially concerning the treatment of skin diseases, and he expressed a continuing commitment to raising awareness within local communities.
Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, also spoke on the topic, highlighting the collaborative efforts with international platforms to address skin diseases. He underscored that skin conditions such as albinism, scabies infections, and some types of skin cancer represent a global challenge that needs focused attention. The World Health Organization has recognized the importance of a coordinated global effort to combat the prevalence of these issues.
The Ministry of Health also pointed out that the rise in these diseases can be linked to environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and hygiene practices. They are encouraging the adoption of healthier living habits and emphasizing the need for better awareness and proactive measures in communities.
Similar discussions have emerged following Fiji’s recent participation in global health initiatives, such as adopting a resolution on “Skin Disease as a Global Public Health Priority.” This resolution aligns with ongoing commitments to strengthen health surveillance, improve access to care, and enhance community involvement in addressing health challenges.
While the increasing rates of neglected tropical diseases may seem concerning, the concerted efforts by health officials, local communities, and international organizations reflect a hopeful path toward improved health education and awareness. Together, these initiatives aim to foster a healthier environment and empower individuals to take charge of their health, leading to better health outcomes across Fiji.
