FASANOC chief executive Vanessa Kilner delivered an encouraging message to the Fijiana 7s team during a thanksgiving event held for Team Fiji participants in the Olympic Games in Paris. Kilner emphasized the importance of resilience, stating that losses are a natural part of sports and what truly matters is the ability to recover and improve.
At the celebration, Fiji was recognized for returning with a silver medal after competing against 84 countries, ultimately finishing in 74th place. Kilner praised all of Team Fiji’s athletes across various sports, including taekwondo, athletics, swimming, table tennis, judo, sailing, and both men’s and women’s rugby sevens, highlighting their dedication and competitive spirit in the face of elite global talent.
Acknowledging that some losses were particularly tough, Kilner reminded the athletes that such experiences are integral to the Olympic journey. She expressed pride in the women’s rugby team for their achievement in reaching the Olympics and reiterated the significance of learning from both wins and losses.
Kilner stressed that setbacks can lead to new opportunities for development in the upcoming years. She encouraged the athletes to focus on how they respond to challenges and to strive for excellence in future competitions.
During the event, Vicky Wu caught the attention of a Japanese table tennis coach, who recognized his potential, suggesting a promising path if he remains dedicated. Young athletes Tolu Young, Anahira McCutcheon, Lolohea Naitasi, and Gerard Takayawa also demonstrated their talent, showing that with proper nurturing, they could elevate Fiji’s standing in future Olympic events.
The thanksgiving took place at the Holiday Inn in Suva, attended by FASANOC staff, Fiji National Sports Commission chief executive Peter Mazey, several athletes, and sponsors.
