New talent emerged in the Veuuito Primary School under-14 rugby team as they celebrated a thrilling 8-5 victory over Dudley Intermediate School during the Suva Kaji Rugby competition on Saturday at the Saint Marcellin Primary School grounds. This match marked a crucial point in the ongoing tournament, allowing the team to demonstrate their skills and determination as they navigate toward the knockout stages.

Coach Lawrence Mataitoga expressed immense pride in his players and credited their victory to the months of preparation they undertook since the beginning of the term. “We began our preparations in term one, and the boys were exceptional during training. We have worked hard to build a strong team for this year,” he stated, highlighting the team’s commitment and focus leading up to this challenge.

Recognizing the competitive nature of their pool, which he described as a “pool of death,” Mataitoga stressed the importance of taking each game one at a time to overcome their formidable opponents. The victory against Dudley not only boosts the team’s confidence but also elevates their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

Mataitoga praised the players for their composure and confidence, especially given the do-or-die context of the match. “The boys were confident coming into this match; they knew it was a do-or-die situation. We can’t let down all our hard work from the months to lose, so I’m proud of the boy’s performance,” he remarked.

Though the team celebrated a hard-fought win, Mataitoga acknowledged areas that need improvement as they prepare to face Draiba Primary School in their next match. He emphasized the need to maintain ball possession and capitalize on their opponents’ fatigue.

This victory not only serves as a highlight for the Veuuito team but also contributes positively to the local rugby scene, reflecting the significant talent and determination of young athletes in Fiji. As they continue to strive for success, their journey inspires hope and a sense of community for budding sports enthusiasts in the region.
