Repeka Koroi and Veronika Rabuliwaisavu, talented athletes from Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, have been awarded full scholarships by Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School to continue their education. This recognition follows their remarkable achievements at the 2024 Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships last month.
Koroi, originating from Korovuli Village in Macuata, excelled in her events, claiming two gold medals in the Under-14 girls’ 800m and 1500m races. Meanwhile, Rabuliwaisavu, hailing from Lomaloma Village, secured gold in the Under-13 girls’ 400m and a silver medal in the 200m final.
The duo expressed gratitude towards their coach, Iosefo Apisai of Nasealevu Village, who praised their hard work and dedication. Apisai noted the advantages of their hostel accommodations, which allowed for effective training alongside fellow students. He implemented a strict training timetable and took pride in leading his team to earn the most medals—five gold, three silver, and two bronze—among the 12 schools in the Macuata South region.
Repeka, the Year Eight dux at her school, aspires to become a primary school teacher. She dedicated her success to her father, Epeli Balawa, who supported her scholarship journey. Her ambitions include representing Fiji at the Olympic Games, fueled by her strong faith.
Veronika, 13, expressed joy at being the first in her family to win both a silver and gold medal, along with the scholarship to study in Suva. Her father, a yaqona farmer, is proud of her accomplishments and encourages her passion for athletics.
Inoke Biaunisala, head teacher of Vudibasoga Catholic School, expressed satisfaction with their students’ progress. Following the success of last year’s scholarship recipient, he aims to prepare more students for similar opportunities in the next academic year.
The achievements of Koroi and Rabuliwaisavu, along with their fellow athletes, showcase the potential and dedication of young sports talents in Fiji, highlighting the importance of community support and quality education in shaping their futures.
This story not only celebrates the triumphs of these young athletes but also inspires other students to strive for excellence in sports and academics. With continued support from their teachers and families, the future looks bright for these aspiring Olympians.
