Students from Saint Joseph’s Secondary School (SJSS) recently participated in an athletics trial at the HFC Bank Stadium, aiming to identify promising young athletes for the upcoming Suva Zone meet. The event, held on Saturday, was directed by Joseph Rodan, a former Fiji athlete and current SJSS athletics coach. Under his leadership, the team worked to harness and enhance the athletic potential of its students.

Rodan expressed his appreciation for the voluntary support provided by fathers and teachers, noting the ongoing commitment to the trials over the years. The objective of the trial was to assess the girls’ athletic potential, particularly focusing on those who had engaged in off-season training during the holidays. A remarkable one hundred girls have shown their dedication, actively training from the beginning of the term.

Encouragement was a crucial aspect of the trial, as Rodan urged the participants to enjoy each training session and embrace the journey toward the upcoming zone competition and Coca-Cola Games. He emphasized the importance of developing their skills while fostering a love for the sport.

Rodan also invited former students, parents, and community supporters to rally behind the athletes as they prepare for the competition. Looking ahead, the second athletics trial is scheduled for week seven, promising further opportunities for athletes to shine.

This initiative at SJSS highlights the importance of community support and engagement in nurturing young athletes, echoing similar efforts seen in other regions, such as Labasa, where local schools and sporting councils are rallying to foster athletic talent. Such collaborative efforts not only build individual skill but also cultivate a strong athletic community for future success.

Overall, the enthusiasm and commitment displayed by the students is a hopeful sign for the future of athletics in Fiji, as these aspiring athletes gear up to showcase their talents on larger stages.
