The Sinukakala women’s sevens team is gearing up for the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, viewing it as a vital opportunity for their players to gain match experience. Manageress Esther Koronavatu shared insights during a recent interview, emphasizing that the team has been preparing since November with many of the players coming from the Nasinu women’s provincial XV’s team.
Koronavatu noted the team’s transition from fifteen-a-side to seven-a-side rugby, highlighting that while some players have experience with other clubs, they have all been training together. However, attendance at training sessions has been affected by the holiday season preparations.
Despite the challenges, Koronavatu expressed confidence in her team, citing their successful performance in the under-20 Fiji Sports Council 7s series, where they consistently reached the finals and secured victories against formidable opponents like the Seahawks. The team is composed mainly of young athletes around 20 years old, all accustomed to high-intensity matches and participating in regular training sessions at Albert Park, complemented by gym workouts twice a week.
The goal for the tournament is clear: to qualify for the finals and strive for victory in the women’s category. Koronavatu acknowledged the strength of the competition but emphasized their commitment to rigorous preparation. The inclusion of experienced national players like Silika Qalo and Sera Bolatini is expected to bolster their chances significantly, while the presence of sports science students from Fiji National University brings additional expertise to the team.
In summary, the Sinukakala women’s sevens team is well-prepared and hopeful as they head into the tournament. Their combination of youth and experience, along with a solid training regimen, positions them as a competitive force, demonstrating the spirit of resilience and determination that characterizes their approach to the game.
This optimistic outlook not only underscores their readiness but also showcases the evolving landscape of women’s rugby in the region, paving the way for future successes.
