Rewa’s young footballers showcased their skills and determination at the McDonald’s Southern Zone league, held at the Fiji Football Academy grounds in Vatuwaqa. The matches delivered impressive results for multiple age groups, with the under-14 boys achieving a resounding 8-0 victory over Navua. The under-10 boys mirrored this success, also defeating Navua 8-0 and managing a 1-1 draw with Suva.
In the girls’ category, the under-14 squad exhibited their prowess with two narrow wins, both 1-0, against Suva and Navua, while the under-12 boys faced a challenging game, experiencing a close loss to Suva with a score of 2-1. Head coach Rodeck Singh emphasized the importance of the McDonald’s league as a vital platform for development, stating, “This is the golden age. It’s crucial to monitor the progress of these young players.”
Singh praised the growth of the players, many of whom are just 12 or 13 years old but are already demonstrating maturity on the field. His approach centers on the belief that talent must be coupled with effort: “Effort is always more important than talent.”
The tournament is seen as significant not just for the players’ current success but as a means to identify future representatives of Rewa and the Bula Boys national team. Singh expressed gratitude to the Fiji Football Association and the organizers for providing such valuable opportunities for youth development.
Suva’s under-12 boys also had strong performances, defeating Rewa 2-1 and winning 4-0 against Navua. As Rewa continues to build on its progress, Coach Singh remains optimistic about the long-term goals for the team, looking forward to future competitions and further development of these promising young athletes.
With a strong community and organizational backing, the future of youth football in Fiji looks bright, as these young talents prepare to make their mark in the sport.
