The Queensland Reds have announced their squad for the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, featuring promising young talents Trevor King and Will McCulloch, both of whom have impressive credentials from the Australian Under-20s team. The squad comprises 19 players with prior Test experience, including 18 Wallabies and former All Blacks prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen. This robust lineup includes 12 players who have each played over 50 matches for the team, with co-captain Tate McDermott leading the way with 91 caps.
Adding to the excitement, Wallabies returnees Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Filipo Daugunu join the roster as off-season signings. Other new recruits—Lachie Anderson, Josh Canham, Matt Gibbon, and Mason Gordon—have already begun familiarizing themselves with the team through the Reds International Program.
Notably, 19-year-old Trevor King and 20-year-old Will McCulloch, along with 23-year-old Jude Gibbs from Sydney’s Northern Suburbs club, are the latest squad additions seeking to make their mark in Super Rugby. The Reds International Program has proven valuable in helping young players gain essential match experience. For instance, Dre Pakeho has showcased his skills against top-notch international teams despite not debuting in Super Rugby yet.
Reds head coach Les Kiss highlighted the continuous evolution of the squad, emphasizing the hard work required to excel in the upcoming season. He underscored the positive trajectory of players transitioning from the Academy to professional play, encouraging King and McCulloch to harness this opportunity to improve their games.
McCulloch expressed his excitement about joining the Reds, particularly after witnessing Academy players like Dre Pakeho successfully advance to the professional level. King, having already played two years for the Australian U20s, and Gibbs, who has a strong drive to compete at this level, reflect the determination and passion of the new recruits.
The Reds are set to kick off their 2025 season against Moana Pasifika on February 21, following pre-season matches in Europe. As they prepare for this competitive season, the integration of youthful energy, dedication to training, and the pursuit of excellence bodes well for the team’s future.
This announcement is a hopeful sign for Queensland rugby, as the mixture of experienced players and rising stars could lead to a promising Super Rugby season ahead. The dedication to nurturing young talent demonstrates a commitment to building a strong foundation for the team’s long-term success.
