Repeka Koroi and Veronika Raburiwaisavu, two talented athletes from Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, have been granted full scholarships to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School, enabling them to further their education. This opportunity comes on the heels of their impressive performances at the 2024 Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships held last month.

Koroi, hailing from Korovuli Village, Macuata, excelled in the Under-14 girls’ events, earning two gold medals in the 800m and 1500m finals. Meanwhile, Raburiwaisavu, from Lomaloma Village, secured gold in the Under-13 girls’ 400 meters and a silver in the 200 meters final.

Both students expressed their gratitude towards their coach and teacher, Iosefo Apisai of Nasealevu Village. Apisai shared his pride in helping students gain admission to a well-regarded school in Suva that emphasizes both academics and sports. He noted the success of their training regimen—implemented since the beginning of the year—which contributed to their impressive medal tally of five gold, three silver, and two bronze medals across 12 schools.

Repeka, who dreams of becoming a primary school teacher, was the dux of her Year Eight class. She credited her success to her father, Epeli Balawa, for supporting her scholarship opportunity while sharing her aspirations of representing Fiji in the Olympic Games. Veronika, at just 13, celebrated being the first in her family to earn both silver and gold medals and be awarded a scholarship to study in Suva. She expressed her father’s joy and support for her running pursuits.

The head teacher of Vudibasoga Catholic School, Inoke Biaunisala, expressed his satisfaction with the increased number of scholarship recipients this year compared to the last. He emphasized the school’s ongoing commitment to preparing students for future opportunities.

The achievements of Koroi and Raburiwaisavu reflect not only their dedication but also the support of their families and educators, further highlighting the importance of fostering young talent in sports and academics. As they embark on this new chapter, the community is hopeful for their continued success and contribution to Fiji’s representation on the global stage.
