Tony Chan, a 24-year-old medical student, emphasizes the crucial role that support and encouragement from others plays in achieving success. This belief was highlighted as he was awarded five medals during the University of Fiji’s graduation ceremony at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka on Friday.
Chan was recognized as the UniFiji Outstanding Student in Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, and Community Health and Family Service. In a remarkable achievement, he was one of only two students to receive the prestigious gold medal award for 2024, along with the Vice-Chancellor Award.
Reflecting on his journey, the former Jai Narayan College student in Suva shared that his biggest challenge came from being separated from his family during the COVID pandemic. He expressed deep gratitude towards his family, schoolmates, and faculty members—especially Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete—for their unwavering support. “Their words of encouragement and support played a big part in my achievement. My schoolmates were the ones who stood by me through these six years,” he noted, while also expressing surprise at receiving multiple awards.
Chan attributes his accomplishments to the determination recognized by his educators and credits his parents as his primary role models. He believes that the medals and certificates he earned will open up numerous opportunities within the medical field.
This story serves as an inspiring reminder of how a strong support system can play a pivotal role in personal and academic success. The resilience shown by Chan during challenging times reflects a positive outlook for future medical professionals who may face similar obstacles.
His journey is a beacon of hope, showcasing that with determination and a strong support network, one can overcome difficulties and achieve greatness.
