Inia Yavala, a 23-year-old from Namuka, Lau, has recently graduated as a Fijian Corrections Service (FCS) officer and earned the title of Best Disciplined Recruit during the ceremony. He has expressed a commitment to serving with integrity and making a positive impact on his community. Following his secondary education at an all-boys’ school, Yavala set his aspirations on joining the corrections service, a goal he achieved after 14 weeks of rigorous training.
Reflecting on his journey, Yavala acknowledged the challenges he faced, from maintaining physical fitness to adhering to strict discipline. He credited his family and friends within the force for their unwavering support throughout his training. “It wasn’t easy at first,” he noted, “but I kept my focus, knowing we had to perform.”
Yavala is part of a group of 64 recruits who shared a strong work ethic during their training. He emphasized the importance of rehabilitation in the corrections field and believes that working as a corrections officer offers opportunities to contribute to public safety and assist in the rehabilitation of offenders. Yavala stated, “It can be a fulfilling job for those who want to make a positive difference in society,” underscoring the pride and satisfaction that comes from serving the community.
This graduation event aligns with broader initiatives within the FCS that aim to foster professionalism and integrity in the corrections environment, reinforcing the commitment to community rehabilitation and safety. As highlighted by the FCS Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the dedication shown by new officers like Yavala sets a hopeful tone for the future of corrections in Fiji, ensuring ongoing improvement in the standards and practices of the service.
These developments indicate a progressive approach within the Fiji Corrections Service, focusing on skill enhancement, community service, and a commitment to integrity—a promising step toward positive change in the corrections landscape.
