Tanesa Areki, a rising star in athletics and bronze medallist from the 2024 Fiji Finals, is raising the bar for herself ahead of this year’s competition. The Year 10 student from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School recently claimed gold in the junior girls shot put event during the Suva Zone One Athletics competition, achieving an impressive distance of 11.10 meters.

Areki’s victory is particularly notable as she aims for the top honors at the upcoming Fiji Finals, building on her third-place finish in the sub-junior girls shot put event last year. She is determined to step up her performance and make a significant impact this time around.

Her preparation has not been without challenges, but the hard work she has put in is already showing results. “I believe I am heading in the right direction, and I urge my opponents to come prepared,” she stated confidently. Areki’s goal is ambitious; she aspires to break the record in the junior girls shot put event when the Fiji Finals take place from April 24th to 26th at the HFC Bank Stadium.

Grateful for the support from her coaches and teammates, Areki emphasized the importance of teamwork in her journey: “I hope I have made them proud after winning gold today.” Her enthusiasm and dedication are inspiring, mirroring the spirits and efforts of other young athletes in Fiji, showcasing the community’s collective aspiration for excellence in sports.

Anticipation is building for the Fiji Finals, as athletes prepare to not only compete but also potentially set new records, contributing to a culture of achievement and resilience among Fiji’s youth.

Overall, Areki’s journey not only represents her personal ambition but also reflects a supportive sports community that encourages young talent to reach for their dreams.
