In just over a year in France, Setareki Turagacoke has quickly established himself in the rugby world. The 18-year-old from Lelean Memorial School recently made his Top 14 debut and also received his first Test cap representing the FIJI Water Flying Fijians. Turagacoke was a last-minute addition to the team, stepping in for the injured lock Isoa Nasilasila.
Hailing from Dakuinuku, Sawakasa, with maternal ties to Naselai, Nuku, and Tailevu, Turagacoke played a pivotal role in Fiji’s recent 33-19 victory over Spain at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, contributing to the scoreline as one of five try scorers.
Head coach Mick Byrne emphasized that patience was key to their success, as the team was trailing 7-10 at halftime after scoring a solitary try through Ponipate Loganimasi. Caleb Muntz’s conversion brought the score to 10-10 before Fiji surged in the second half with four unanswered tries. Muntz successfully converted four out of the five tries, with other scorers including Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu.
Byrne remarked on the intense nature of the match, stating that the halftime message focused on maintaining composure and sticking to their game plan. He acknowledged that errors and missed opportunities plagued the first half but remained optimistic about the team’s response in the second half.
Next, Fiji will face Ireland on Sunday at 3:10 am in their final Test match at Aviva Stadium in Dublin. This encounter marks only the sixth meeting between the two teams, with Ireland securing victories in all previous five matches, including a 35-17 win during the 2022 Autumn Series.
Captain Nayacalevu recognized the dynamic and physical nature of Spanish rugby and expressed satisfaction in their performance at the stadium, showcasing their commitment to preparation and fitness.
This new chapter for Turagacoke and the Flying Fijians reflects a promising future for Fiji rugby, highlighting the potential for growth and success as they continue to compete against formidable teams on the international stage. With resilience and strategic play, the team looks forward to their meeting with Ireland, aiming to turn the tide in their favor.
