In just 14 months, Setareki Turagacoke has quickly established himself in France’s rugby scene. The 18-year-old, previously a student at Lelean Memorial School, made his debut in the Top 14 this year and also achieved a significant milestone by earning his first Test cap for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians.
Turagacoke was called up at the last minute to join the team, stepping in for the injured lock Isoa Nasilasila. The talented athlete from Dakuinuku in Sawakasa, who has strong family ties to Naselai, Nuku, and Tailevu, contributed to his team’s 33-19 victory over Spain at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid, scoring one of the five tries.
Head coach Mick Byrne attributed the win to the team’s patience, stating that they adjusted their strategy at halftime while trailing 7-10. The team managed to score only once in the first half but turned the game around in the second half, scoring four consecutive tries. Caleb Muntz successfully converted four of the five tries, contributing significantly to the victory, with other tries scored by Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu.
Byrne emphasized the importance of staying composed during the challenging first half and focused on improving their possession during play. He noted that the team experienced some frustrating moments, particularly by not maintaining control of the ball.
Looking ahead, Fiji is set to face Ireland on Sunday at 3:10 am in their final Test match at Aviva Stadium in Dublin. This match will mark their sixth encounter, with Ireland having won all five of the previous meetings, including a 35-17 victory during the 2022 Autumn Series.
Captain Nayacalevu acknowledged the dynamic and physical nature of Spanish rugby, expressing pride in the team’s performance in preparation for the match and enjoyment of the experience in the stadium.
This recent victory not only showcases Fiji’s budding talent, particularly in young players like Turagacoke, but also underscores the team’s potential for growth and resilience as they prepare for their challenging match against Ireland. With a strong performance behind them, there is hope that they can rise to the occasion and turn the tide in future encounters.
