Fijian Drua halfback Philip Baselala is determined to secure a top three position in the team. Currently sitting fourth in the squad, he faces tough competition from teammates Frank Lomani, Simione Kuruvoli, and Peni Matawalu. At just 20 years old, Baselala is setting ambitious goals for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season.
“My main goal for next season is to get more game time,” Baselala stated. He noted that Frank and Simi have motivated him to push each other, highlighting how this camaraderie helps improve their fitness levels and chances of making the starting lineup.
In 2023, Baselala had the opportunity to play in two Super Rugby matches before facing significant setbacks. He endured a knee injury that sidelined him for the entire season, followed by a wrist injury that required surgery. However, after completing his rehabilitation, he has received clearance to return to the field.
Philip Baselala’s journey demonstrates resilience and determination in overcoming challenges. With his sights firmly set on a more significant role within the team, his positive mindset and supportive teammates could lead to a bright future in Super Rugby. This bodes well not only for Baselala but also for the overall performance of the Fijian Drua as they look to bolster their roster ahead of the new season.
